People (used to?) talk about how the Right had “taken” the American flag, and some liberals would say, “You can’t have it. It belongs to all of us.”
Now we’re debating whether the OK gesture “belongs” to white supremacists?
Let me settle this once and for all: No, it doesn’t.

Well therein is what makes it a good troll. It is everywhere.
So I think the original meme was an intern photo with Trump and one person giving the OK instead of a thumbs up like everyone else. It seems just subversive enough that maybe it IS a dog whistle. You start to wonder if you missed something. Then somehow racist trolls caught on to this and started taking pics of them flashing the OK symbol for the LOLs.
I mean, there are A LOT of racist symbols and you can’t know them all. Like “88”, even though it is used in racist circles, it is also just a design motif, lucky numbers in many Asian cultures, and the number of many popular sports stars. The number alone isn’t racist, but used in the right context it is.
The okay symbol hasn’t begun to cross that threshold, but it could.
