PayPal Gives InfoWars the boot

Nope. It’s only a First Amendment violation if the government does it. A company is free to not business with anyone.

And where were you when the same happened to WikiLeaks years ago?

Um no. PayPal is not a government agency.

This really needs to be used EVERY GOD DAMN TIME doesn’t it.

Also hi new user. Welcome to BoingBoing… before you try to derail us with Freeze Peach… Please see this topic.

And there he is!

Wait, at 6 hours into the thread?
Even allowing for time zones, this is just slacking off.

Not sure if serious. But, yes we should be celebrating. If a left winger, or anyone else, becomes such a despicably non-human being as Scumbag Jones, then they deserve it too.

Hi. I’m not an American, but when you say “these are our first amendment rights”, I assume you refer to the words:

“Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech”.

That’s Congress. Not PayPal. Congress. The First Amendment does NOT say “Nobody shall do anything that abridges freedom of speech”.

If you’re on my lawn, shouting shit, I can make you shut up and that’s perfectly legal and right and how the world works.

Imagine what hell an alternative universe would be in which anyone could say anything without fear of consequence.

Sorry for the dupe - I should have read the replies as you got there first.

You seem to be working from an outdated script.
Please contact your supervisor to obtain the current revision and discuss further deployment.

Just one correction. Jones is very much human (as are the rest of the far right). That makes his actions more horrifying, not less.

No problem. I am betting you could tattoo it to their foreheads and they still wouldn’t get it.

Infowars was removed because they advocated for hatred and bigotry. If any business advocated for hatred and bigotry, people would be calling their advertisers, landlords, etc., to stop sponsoring them, or to stop supporting them in other ways.

That’s why your false equivalence is so obviously flawed - there’s no “equal” party on the left that believes in such things. And there shouldn’t be anyone on the right supporting such things, either.

We’re not nuts, we’re just aware of what is and is not protected by the first amendment :confused:And no, actually, I don’t like wasting my time and energy arguing with people who aren’t worth it, don’t care, and only want to grief me. I don’t consider it my right, I consider it being unable to breath air that isn’t primarily composed of farts.

So this is how free speech dies, with thunderous applause!!! - Star Wars

American citizenship is advanced! Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. - American President (film)

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. - Martin Niemöller

This is Alex Jones. I do not agree with theories and opinions. However, I believe in his right to speak and operate a business which I would spend a lifetime trying to convince other people he is wrong and to no do business.

If you continue to let businesses, politics, and the governement determine what speech you can hear, then you have given up your liberty. Do not be surprised when they come after something dear to you and NO ONE stands up to support you!

So you didn’t bother to read all the comments first. No their freeze peach isn’t being taken away. See above for explanations. Personally I think PayPal and Alex Jones deserve each other. But I guess there are some things even too vile for PayPal.

No-one has taken away those rights. Private institutions have banned him from using their platforms or services because he undeniably violated their terms of service regarding spreading hateful and fraudulent claims, as is their right.

If those on the alt-right want to remain on these platforms and services they’ll just have to be more circumspect and subtle about spreading their lies and bigotry (I’d suggest they refrain from doing so entirely, but this is the alt-right we’re talking about).

Oh for Pete’s sake

  1. Alex Jones can keep spouting his nonsense, this just means PayPal won’t be doing business with him
  2. That wasn’t even the actual line from the dumbass movie
  3. Just because someone’s speech is technically legal (and it’s not even clear Jones’ libelous garbage falls into that category) that doesn’t mean any of us have a moral obligation to support it or provide a platform to share it
