Dude… the idea that anyone can ‘hold the reins’ if that happens is purely delusional.
The only thing keeping the ‘common masses’ from tearing the country to shreds is the ‘bread’ and the “circuses.”
And if the bread runs out, all the circuses in the world won’t distract a starving mob; if that last straw breaks, people will violently lash out at whatever target is closest.
The president’s Blackness had no actual impact on poor people’s ability to put food on the table, despite that some folks’ bigotry had them totally convinced otherwise. Actually going hungry is an amazing ‘motivator.’
Any Dem who still thinks that is fooling himself. For all the issues I have with Pelosi, this is not about her trying to show the mob the light. It’s just her as a legislator taking a stand on the obvious: that this wall business is a profoundly stupid and wasteful symbol of xenophobia.
I’ve seen it suggested that one of the contractors who would build the wall (Evraz, which also made some steel for the Keystone XL pipeline) is a subsidiary of an international firm largely owned by Russian oligarchs.
Point being: Trump may be under pressures that we’re not accounting for. If the US funds the wall, it will be the Democrats’ fault that Mexico isn’t paying for it. If the US doesn’t fund the wall, it will be the Democrats’ fault that Trump’s Russian associates won’t get whatever grift they’ve got in mind.
But in either scenario, making a lot of noise about it will pay, I suppose.
The TCJA did, however, modify the gambling loss deduction, beginning in 2018. For this purpose, the definition of gambling losses has been broadened to include other expenses incurred in gambling activities, such as travel back and forth from a casino or track.
For instance, you can continue to deduct gambling losses, up to the amount of winnings, on 2017 returns and beyond.
So it’s really just matching peoples intuitive idea of gambling winnings. If you win some hands and lose some hands you say you won/lost the sum of the winnings/losings. If you lost you don’t get a deduction. If it didn’t work this way then you’d have to keep track of each hand/roll/pull/whatever and pay taxes on the ones you won, even if you lost money overall.
But the bit you quoted where they broadened the notion gambling losses just seems like a subsidy to the gambling industry.
But it’s just brown liberals that are on SNAP right? So yay fuhrer tRump!
Wait… there are tons of red state working families on SNAP? Well, they’re obviously drug abusing jobless losers amirite?
Wait… they’re not? They’re folks who have low paying, but regular work, and their kids are going hungry… (oh shit).
(the thought process of your average TeaGOP politico)
I’m trying to be a full time fan of Pelosi. I really am. But I would be 100% if she would realize that we’re living in a sound bite economy now, and she needs her own stupid MAGA type slogan to wear at the rabid redstaters.
Something she yells in Trump’s face to the tune of “IF YOU’RE SO SERIOUS ABOUT STOPPING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION HOW ABOUT YOU PUNISH SOME EMPLOYERS. OH WAIT, THAT’S YOU” or “TRUMP’S ONLY KEEPING THE GOVERNMENT SHUT TO SLOW THE INVESTIGATION INTO HIS OWN RUSSIAN MONEY LAUNDERING.”
