Pence wouldn’t become President, he’d become Acting President: same as Dick Cheney did when Dubya went for surgery and invoked the 25th himself. Trump would remain President, he just wouldn’t have any powers. Pence could still be elected twice, if the universe is that cruel.

Well, because every source I’ve read says impeachment/trial/removal would take too long, and, clearly: Dumpy won’t do the decent thing (ever?) and resign, then: if more loss of life and damage to the body politic happens in the next 12 days due to the POTUS - who may just be the Biggest Fraud In History - then it’s on Pence for NOT invoking the 25th.
Pence is responsible, say, if Dump tells Kim Jong Un to go ahead and nuke California/Oregon/Washington because those states were “mean” to him. (I live near San Francisco, so I have skin in that game, big-time.)
Who knows what this narcissistic sociopath is capable of now that most of the entire world is looking at him and saying, “Loser!”…a major horror for him ever since his monstrous father imprinted in him that being a Loser was the worst thing imaginable.

The incentive should be preserving democracy and sending a message that an attempted coup is an unacceptable means of securing power. That should be his fucking incentive. If it’s not, he’s manifestly unfit for office, too, and likely agrees with the ultimate aims of Trump and other authoritarians. But that should not be shocking, since Pence is a Christian dominionist who wants to create a Christian theocracy.

He would end up with no real power because of the short time frame and would be dedicating the rest of his time to justifying it and basic continuity of government issues. It would also destroy his last illusions that he could be elected in his own right.
That would probably actually give Trump more power. He could make the argument that it was a coup because they aren’t allowing for the proper constitutional process. True or not, you could count on conservative media to amplify it until the mainstream media runs with it in the interests of pleasing both sides.
I think the risk of an actual bombing is very low, even if the request was made. The North Korean regime has been very good at remaining in power and that would be the end of their run. I think a much more likely outcome is them, recognizing the lack of trust in the US government, publicly claiming that such a request was made. The political fall out would tear us to pieces and protect their personal power.
They have boats and they have nukes. If they desired they could nuke any port city. I’ll agree they have no willingness.

Yeah, that’s the “willing to” part I was referring to. I’m just pushing back against the whole Axis of Evil rhetoric that pervades American foreign policy even under democratic presidents. There aren’t any countries out there whose sole wish is to harm the US.
(That doesn’t excuse anything North Korea is doing to its own citizens or its region but it’s important to understand that that is what they are interested in: their own country and their region of the world. They have no intention of attacking the US and gety themselves wiped out.)

Given the reliabilty of their missiles the only way the DPRK could reach the west coast is to put one in a shipping container. People living a lot closer may have a different experience.

While that might be what’s going on in his head, it doesn’t match up well with the reality that he’s 1. so mind-numbingly uncharismatic that he has zero chance, and 2. he’s already been branded a traitor by the cult, as evidenced by their chant to hang him during the Trumpsurrection.

I agree, DukeTrout, on both your points. I’m not sure if they’ve soaked into Pence’s head yet though. I theorize–theorize, mind you–that he believes his evangelical backers’ religious zeal would overcome their Trumpian zeal. If so he’s likely wrong. On the other hand Pence might think he could pass himself off to his party as the “restrained” Trumpian who could deliver the base without Trump’s instability. In that, too, I think he’d be wrong. I have the impression that few Republicans have any use for him beyond those evangelical voters. If they stick with Trump, Pence would be no use to the party at all.

If Pence cannot bring himself to push for the 25th, or if he cannot find enough cabinet members to support it, he should just resign. Otherwise, and if nothing else, he is condoning a president that orchestrated a mob and incited them to ask for him to be hanged. Nice bonus: Pelosi would be next in the line of succession.

That would be nice, but is not the way it works. If the VP resigns or is unable to perform his/her duties, the President nominates a replacement who must be confirmed by Congress.
The only way Pelosi moves up in line is if the Pres doesn’t get a nominee in place and confirmed before they themselves are removed/resign.
Unless I misunderstood and that’s what you meant. To me, it sounded like you were saying that Pelosi would be come VP, but upon re-reading, I could see a different intent. I apologize if I misread your post.
