This part. Do what’s right. If you fail, so what? You did the right thing.
If Penn fires her and loses a lawsuit, so what? Remove her from ALL duties at the university and pay her to do nothing. The only thing you’re doing there is losing some money. Big fucking deal; it’s a decimal point on the interest on the university’s endowment. Keep her and the university’s reputation is tainted for decades. Good luck getting that back.
It’s worse than that. Good people will leave Penn if they keep her. They are harming more than their reputation. They are harming their students’ education as good professors go elsewhere. We see it in the private sector all the time. Keep making excuses for loud assholes and quiet geniuses leave.
Especially when sooo many White people of privilege don’t like to even acknowledge the unpleasant reality of racism, because it discomforts them.
Even many who like to think that they are on the correct side of history…
I don’t think there’s anyone in this thread that thinks that Wax shouldn’t be gone. She should have been gone 4 years ago, probably should never have been hired. There were people upthread that were interested in what tenure protections might mean for her, and I was trying to share what I know about that.
There is no downside to applying pressure to get rid of her, since even if she has protections it adds incentive to the Penn administrators to try to find a way through those protections.
