I only vaguely know who this guy is, but after a little poking around I see he seems to be in the full-time business of apologizing for and clarifying offensive statements, with a side hobby of making videos when he has the time for it between apology gigs. Strange occupation.

The thing about “cherry picking” is that I still won’t come back with any cherries if I go looking for them in a place that doesn’t bear such fruit.
Most public figures’ work can’t get edited down to a series of highly offensive antisemitic slurs and holocaust jokes because they simply don’t DO antisemitic slurs and holocaust jokes. Most public figures aren’t judged by the Nazi community in their fan base because there IS no significant number of Nazis in their fan bases.

I find myself really annoyed by the offensive statement–I was just joking–I’m being censored dialectic this morning. There’s a world of humor out there; PewDiePie could have paid people $5 to talk about:
- Ducks — Did you know that the male duck has a corkscrew shaped penis? Now you do. Also, they’re assholes. No-one would have been offended by duck jokes; they might even have learned something.
- The Ford Pinto — A decade of ugly, unloved automotive incompetence. Pintos had a tendency to self-immolate when hit from behind at low speed. No-one would have been offended by Pinto humor.
- Comic Sans — Why does it exist? Couldn’t we have just not? Even people who love Comic Sans do so with quiet shame. Go on and roast it.
- Clouds — Okay, there’s nothing inherently funny about clouds, but there’s nothing offensive about them either. Have at it.
Instead, PewDiePie paid people $5 to talk about:
- Nazism
- Hitler
- The Holocaust
It isn’t difficult to find things to talk about that aren’t racist, misogynist, antisemitic, or otherwise offensive. If you go there anyway, and if you support other people who go there, then you yourself are racist, misogynistic, antisemitic and offensive. Either own it or stop doing it, but enough with the whinging and conservative snowflake victimology.

Even if one is “just acting” like an asshole solely for the ‘monetized shock value,’ that person is STILL acting like an asshole.
The intent behind the behavior doesn’t matter, because it still has a real, negative impact on numerous people’s lives.
Poisonous ideas can take root and spread, in even the shallowest ground…
