Political fall out from Covid-19 pandemic

Despite being at the back of the pack among his Democratic rivals this year, Biden’s 2020 emission reduction goal (net zero by 2050) is bolder than Sanders’s was in 2016 (80% by 2050).

Biden is already bending, just a bit. At a pre-Earth Day fundraiser this month, he debuted a new timeframe of action by 2035, not 2050. The big wild card here, of course, is the pandemic lockdown. Youth climate activism in a world of coronavirus is going to look a lot different than the school strike movement that peaked last year. But kids these days are brilliant at this stuff, and with the world as we know it at stake, you can bet there will be a resurgence in the youth voice later this year.

Biden’s biggest flaw is that he listens to some bad people, but it’s worth remembering that means that he listens to people.

Look who’s having a falling out.

  1. Ann Coulter, the soulless hellbeast who unironically titled one of her books In Trump We Trust, (because Trump is their God now!) criticized something about Trump’s immigration policy (presumably because it wasn’t racist enough?)
  2. Trump responds with the kind of casually racist genocide-mocking comment he normally reserves for Elizabeth Warren by saying Coulter has “gone off the reservation.”
  3. Coulter swipes back by saying “the only national emergency we have right now is that the President is an idiot,” which is accurate as far as her assessment of his intelligence goes but somehow positions her as even WORSE in terms of assessing the dangers of the pandemic.

I guess we can only hope to see more of this infighting through November.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez echoed that sentiment, tweeting, “no matter who you support, it is extremely dangerous that New York is establishing a precedent of cancelling elections citing COVID.” Stacey Abrams, who has endorsed Joe Biden, agreed: “NY’s decision to cancel its primary creates a false choice: asking voters to pick safety or participation in our democracy. This is wrong. Elections officials can hold safe, accessible elections, where voters cast ballots by mail or safely in person.”

Your daily reminder that while Cuomo may not be murderous or completely incompetent (let’s not forget that he was very slow to act, if better than his other GOP colleagues), he is and will always be an anti-democratic and especially anti-Democratic asshole.

Side note, Stacey Abrams is really getting out there lately. It might just be the kind of publications I read, or people are paying more attention to her because of being floated as a possible VP pick, but I wonder if the reason they’re trying to put her out there now as a strong progressive voice ahead of the announcement.

Works for me. We need women like Ms. Abrams to speak - loudly and often - in direct rebuttal to the anti-democratic voices whoever they may be to fight for free and unfettered voting. Something she was sorely deprived of in that sham gubernatorial election in GA!
She will make a fine veep!

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

here’s the part i really don’t understand… the election isn’t cancelled. just the primary

basically, only the bronx winds up with no contested primaries. so this is all doubly ridiculous: there are still non-presidential races on the ballot.

I really hope EU will fail. With recently introduced copyright filters/internet censorship law going to leave only a few large social media sites still available in EU, it won’t be worth it. The way they disregarded massive public protest shows that it can’t be reformed anymore.
Sluggish response of EU to the current crisis allowed it to get as bad as it is now.

I really hope EU will not fail. I really don’t want live like we lived before.
