Pro-slavery hate tweet with 2.9 million views generates ad revenue for Musk

IMO it’s good to raise awareness of that kind of shit being allowed there, because then it may cause more advertisers to stop putting their ads on Xitter.

Making excuses for his personal culpability for, and profiting from, racist hate is fascist propaganda. Don’t like the term being used about you? Then don’t carry water for fascists.

He fired all of Twitter’s staff devoted to safety and moderation, and then took steps to weaken the site’s code of conduct to allow all forms of hate speech.

He unbanned the accounts of many hate speech purveyors to attract more of that audience to his site. He essentially declared Twitter a safe place for Nazis.

He took steps to make it easier for hate speech to be amplified by selling blue check marks and giving them algorithmic preference allowing pay for play as long as you fork over some money.

He frequently amplifies hate speech by directly driving engagement to these accounts by retweeting or replying to them, and keep in mind his activity is boosted to always show in everybody’s feed whether you follow him or not.

Twitter was never perfect and there was always a fringe element there, but it was typically easier to avoid and filter out. The kind of racist cesspool Twitter has become is due to his direct involvement. This was also completely foreseen and intentional on his part because Musk himself is a racist and fascist.

So yeah, you can fucking blame him for this.

You’re defending him, even while claiming not to.

It doesn’t matter that Musk didn’t post that trash himself; he allows and amplifies incendiary, hateful content.

Elon

  • Has been posting and retweeting racist/fascist content on the platform for years

  • Has changed Twitter’s moderation policies to be more welcoming toward racist/fascist content under the (false) pretense of “free speech absolutism”

  • Has largely eliminated the relatively small number of Twitter employees who were once tasked with holding users to the moderation policies that remain

  • Personally reinstated the accounts of Twitter users who had been previously banned for posting racist/fascist content

In what way is this kind of outcome not on Elon? It’s like he’s hosting the world’s biggest flamethrower party and then trying to explain why it’s not his fault that people are getting burned.

Wait, really? If that post were here on the BBS, would you give Boing Boing a pass because a BBS user posted it?

Yes by law we can’t be held liable for what a user posts here, but you better believe there is a moral imperative for us to do something about it. A moral imperative that IMHO increases with the size of your platform and the subsequent reach it has. The platform (or its owners) don’t get to hide behind “The problem is too big or complex now for us to manage.”
