Ephraim’s name is a reference back to an earlier version of Discovery. During early development the character that became Ripper was going to be a full crewmember, wearing a uniform but the costs of putting a full CGI Tardigrade on the bridge week in-week out made it impractical and Ephraim was rewritten.

There aren’t that many actors who can handle major makeup effects/full body suit on a regular basis. They already had Doug Jones in another part.

In an interesting coincidence, I ended up watching Tank Girl last night and spotted Doug Jones’ name in the credits as one of the background Rippers.
