Queen dead at 96

From now on whenever I do morphine and cocaine together I’ll think of old George :face_with_spiral_eyes:

And yet those of us who would like to go painlessly in this way (non-terminal patients but with good reason) don’t often get that opportunity. :man_shrugging:

With Charles in charge, they might even lose the Falklands.

Which is good. Too many in one place can be a destructive nuisance, but you have to keep the breeding numbers up for genetics reasons.

I think a lot of people will remember this day, where they were at.

I offer sincere condolences to those who loved her, her family and her friends. But beyond that, I’ll defer to Tom Hanks as Walter Fielding, Jr…

Hasn’t the perceived stigma worn off?

My SIL is from the Caribbean and has expressed similar sentiments about Commonwealth status and/or the British monarchy. Some of that might have been due to members of the royal family vacationing there so often in the past, though. :woman_shrugging:t4:

it sounds kind of complicated. for their own assets it sounds like they’re probably millionaires. they just “happen” to be living on a billionaire level estate.

it’s not even clear if they make money or lose money. it depends on exactly how you account for things like security costs ( significant amounts handled by the police which are funded by the tax payers ) and tourist spending

that last article suggests in 2019 it was 1.24 pounds per person per year ( due to some restoration projects i think? ) previously it might have been in the 65 pence range.

Thank yourself you’re not in the UK, to ignore the fawning, non stop coverage of absolutely nothing actually happening you’ll have to become a relative hermit for a month.

I’m already rolling my eyes at the members of the public crying laying flowers at Buckingham palace.

Get me off this rock.

They definitely lose the public money, even if they don’t lose it for themselves.

You get royalists throw their arms in the air about tourism whenever this comes up as if nobody would visit the country anymore if there wasn’t a living monarch, which is baloney. It’s not like anyone actually meets the fucking queen her buildings and shiny hat will still be there to look at.

At a time when normal folks are struggling to pay their energy bills the very existence of monarchy is an insult to the citizenry.

It’s sick.
