I mean, so many variations on the theme, though.
I know of a San Diego businessman who has a Chinese girlfriend he refuses to marry, and they employ Mexican cleaners for minimum wage, and bargain with a Chinese acquaintance for laundry help and other cleaning for less. And also employs (overworks and exploits) a multi-cultural team of employees while bitching about minimum wage and how he should be subsidized by the government for the wages.
And he claims to be “progressive” and anti-Trump.
It’s all a matter of mental gymnastics, I think - beliefs about oneself, self perception or the lack thereof. I imagine I have a streak of it after growing up down here, but I feel no lunging dogs of war in me. I ride herd on myself every waking moment, just in case.
I remember the night after MLK was murdered. Trucks full of national guard were everywhere. I flashed the peace sign at one passing front of us, my mother driving. The guy looking thought I was waving in support, until he took a closer look, then gave me the finger. It was a harrowing time to be 13.
