Read the Trump team's pathetic anti-Comey talking points

Half this would have assuaged Trump’s base. Maybe a third of it.

So I am sadly confident that tomorrow’s testimony won’t accomplish anything.

Unless of course Comey has video of Trump literally eating a baby.

“A study done a few weeks ago found that 89 percent of broadcast network coverage of President Trump has been negative.”

Wonder why that is. . . oh, maybe because the President is a walking disaster. I’m sure coverage of any hurricane is well over 89% negative, I guess the media must have a bias against them too.

“While investigating the Clinton email scandal, Director Comey succumbed to political pressure from the Obama White House – this is far worse than anything President Trump is rumored to have said.”

The logic here is very labored, akin to putting the cart before the horse: because Obama publicly announced that Secretary Clinton “has not jeopardized America’s national security” and “would never intentionally put America in any kind of jeopardy” they claim Obama was signaling how he wanted the investigation to go and the FBI followed suit. If so then every time Trump says the Russia investigation is “fake news” then he too is influencing the investigation. Can’t have your cake and eat it too, kids.

That is a mountain of talking points, isn’t it?
They’re putting a lot of time and effort into this anti-Comey project.
And they’re making TV ads too? This is like Nixon’s address to the American people where he tried to justify his refusal to hand over the tapes.

Sigh. I guess I’ll leave you with this advice:

“The public record is definitive that the President never obstructed an FBI investigation.”

countered with:

“And in fact, when I decided to just do it [fire Comey], I said to myself – I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story.”

the President never obstructed an FBI investigation. … Many have pointed out that if Director Comey really did feel like his investigation was being impeded, why would he not do something about that and raise a red flag? It doesn’t add up.

They’re trying to get away with a dumb language trick.

whoever … corruptly or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication, influences, obstructs, or impedes, or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede, the due administration of justice …

They essentially argue on the basis he didn’t impede. But he endeavored to impede.

It worked with Clinton. They have a bit less time to taint Comey, but I imagine the strategy is just about getting through the next couple of days until the next Trump tweet.

As far as combatting Gish-galloping fellow-travellers goes, pick a point, any point, you know is wrong and you know you can demolish. Stick with it even as the trolley tries to avoid giving a straight answer and tries to go on to another point. Keep it up until you’re confident that everyone can see the trolley for what he is.

Otherwise, if you have the time and resources, start a wiki, let your compatriots have editing rights and no-one else, and write up an answer to each point when you have the time.

The thing about Gish-gallopers is that very few of them actually know what they’re saying in any deep sense. While it can look formidable at first, like Trump’s wall on closer examination a gallop can usually be found to have weak foundations and numerous gaps.

The fact that the RNC is going so far as to broadcast smear videos on the former head of the FBI gives me all the more reason to believe Ryan and the other GOP honchos are very much under Russia’s thumb at this point.

It is beyond defending “their guy, who they can think they can use to get their agenda done.” No, they are acting downright scared. As Ryan said regarding the notion brought up by a GOP bigwig behind closed doors that Trump was being paid by Russia (to paraphrase): “No leaks! We keep this in the family.”

Yeah. America is seemingly utterly doomed, btw. Any suggestions for a good place to move to? Ideally less fascist, more socialist, not too hot, not too cold, and you don’t have to learn a new language? Maybe Vancouver?

You haven’t visited Vancouver, obviously!

So… wait a minute - Obama speaking publicly about the status of an investigation was somehow worse than Trump privately meeting multiple times with the head of the FBI - and in fact, sending everyone out of the room (gee, why would he do that?) - to ask him to drop the investigation, swear loyalty to him and you know, then admitted to firing him to get him to stop his investigations, and who spoke publicly about the investigations to disparage them. Right, that makes sense.

How come no one ever talks about all the icebergs the Titanic didn’t run into? Huh? Why aren’t we talking about how gracefully the Hindenburg fell, flaming, out of the sky? So graceful!

At this point, it has to be Sarah Palin’s baby.

Does writing full transcripts of the conversations and sharing them with other intelligence officials not count or something? Did he literally have to run laps around the white house with a red flag?

America could really use a revival of the Wobblies these days.

A general strike of sufficient heft to paralyse the country is the only way out of this mess that doesn’t involve a lot of shooting. Remember Masha’s rule #3: Institutions will not save you.

Fleeing TrumpGOP by moving to Canada is like fleeing the Nazis by moving to Poland.

Besides, climate change has no range limit, and the US military has worldwide tentacles. We’re all fucked if Americans don’t get together and clean house.

Non-fascist Americans outnumber the Trumpkins by three to one, but y’all have to use that fact.
