I would have went with Dorothy Day, but I guess they still haven’t decided on her. (Dorothy Day - Wikipedia)

Maybe there’s a miscommunication about “These”. I didn’t see anything clearly defined in the original comment about people carrying crosses. Perhaps you have a specific community of pilgrims in mind. I’ve never seen such. I’ve only come across itinerant preachers of an independent nature who carry around some facsimile of a cross (normally made of something light like PVC pipes) as a prop to draw attention to themselves. So I’m not drawing sweeping generalizations, I am only speaking to my experience which I thought was pretty clear from the way I worded my comment.

There are certainly different levels of communalism within Christianity, but to say that there isn’t any level of community is just absurd. At the heart of it is a shared faith in a particular thing. But that’s true of everyone in the world. We’re not born and create all of society anew, with no input from others.

But if you’ve never seen a church or some such… I don’t know what to tell you. These aren’t people wandering around without any reference to anything else. Most people who preach on the streets tend to be connected to other organizations (whether loosely or more tightly).
