the people I heard that from were hunters, who tended to have $1200+ scopes mounted on a rifle that cost about half that, and usually bagged an elk every year, when they got the permits to do so.

Ah, good catch. I was thinking it could be a KC-135 which is a refueling plane.
They had some stationed at McConnell in Wichita, KS when I was a kid.
