In the U.S. military, it’s an old term describing a senior officer’s aide (usually a junior officer) whose job it was to procure illicit goods and services for the brass. Pat Robertson did this during the Korean War, and it’s rumoured that his demented ramblings are the result of his catching the syph while “sampling the merchandise”.

I somehow missed that his 94 year old wife passed away in April last year. Perhaps he’s not far behind.
