Republican Congressman threatens to kill reporter after State of the Union

It’s all good, they’re friends now:

Grimm Apologizes To Reporter And The Two Plan To Grab Lunch
[Talking Points Memo]

"Yeah, you know, no hard feelings, just get some lunch," said a contrite Grimm. “Preferably one of those rooftop restaurants with a real nice view.”

You should break them in half…like a boy.

It means “Acer Platanoides’s defense of your posts is inconsistent with his request that I not defend someone else’s, leading me to suspect either some personal loyalties and/or animosity exist here.” It was really directed at Acer, not you.

My real point was that I thought you were needlessly abusive in some of your responses. I do agree with about 75% of what you’ve said, but not with your use of “treason”, and most certainly not with the methods you’ve used here in discussing the use of that word. I formed that opinion before reviewing some of your posting history here, though, so perhaps it’s on me for not being aware of your personal style.

I know - weird, huh? You would think a gun nut like me would have at least 2 pieces strapped at all times and be ever vigilant of the evil lurking behind every corner. But I tend to stay grounded in reality and don’t get worked up over highly unlikely “what ifs”. Is a congressman throwing someone off a balcony “beyond the realm of possibility”? No. People have thrown others off of balconies. But it would probably be a first for a congressman to do so.

I guess if not ever being threatened by a congressman makes me sheltered, I guess I am. I barely escaped getting the shit beat out of me by 10+ guys at Burger King once and live in what was once the Meth Capital of the world, if that gives me more street cred. I don’t actually own an Xbox - but I played one at a friend’s once. Apparently my mom gets around.

While he is guilty of making threats, and if the journalist is inclined he should press charges, I still don’t believe there was any likelihood of the threat being carried out. You point out the reporter, while confused and frightened, didn’t think the guy was actually going to lay hands on him. So perhaps I’m not alone in thinking he was “just venting”, or rather being bullying and aggressive, with out any intention to make his threats real.

Where our differences lie is our reactions to this event. I’m not the only one who found your reaction a bit overzealous and seemingly a bit disingenuous. In contrast I have more outrage over the less obvious, but very real and systematic ways the gov. pushes to influence our media. In some cases the media is even colluding with them.

Well, yeah, in comparison to the other side’s irrational hyperbole, of course you’re right.

Cowicide is absolutely accurate that openly threatening the fourth estate (and just as openly getting away with it) is a grave danger to any country, indicating a downward spiral into violent chaos. We’re on that downward spiral, no question. It’s a serious crime against our country. There’s no rational comparison between that and simply holding up a banner on a public street and chanting slogans. It’s just not technically “treason”.

I have to work with tea partiers, as well as be in a large extended family of them. They would not be able to “hear” any of Cow’s (otherwise accurate) statements, because they would latch onto that one word and say that a tea partier by definition could not be a traitor.

Maybe think of it this way: Capone went to jail for tax evasion…sometimes you have to lessen the official charges in order to get the thug behind bars.

Totally agree with you. I think it’s much easier to bring down an entire country through eviscerating the fourth estate (layoffs, spin doctors, Fox “news”, etc. all the way up to violent confrontations like this example) than through a group of guerrilla fighters each wielding a hefty assortment of various weapons. It is, in fact, a form of waging war…except it’s not LEGALLY such, so it doesn’t count in terms of pressing charges against the Grimms, Kochs, and Murdochs of the world. More’s the pity.

You almost nailed it…you forgot: violent, felonious, and hate-filled. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’m fairly certain that here in Canuckistan, I would be arrested if I said those things to an MLA or MP. I don’t know US law. Is what Grimm did and said a chargeable offence, or is it a two-tiered system down there, where you have different interpretations of law according to what social castes are involved?

It’s pretty much a guarantee that nothing happens to Grimm from this. At least until they find one of those boys he’s broken in half.
Or he sends a dick pic to his page. Now THAT’s a bigger crime, somehow.

I remember reading that study too, but when I spent a whole 5 seconds googling I couldn’t find it. I did find this however from Forbes, so it’s actually skewed to be pro-CEOs, or at least as much as is possible considering the fact that the takeaway is: yes, capitalism rewards sociopaths by putting them at the helm of businesses.

I don’t know that offering to break someone in half and/or fling them bodily from a high place is what I would equate to taking someone to task or even telling them off. What’s the chance the House will see fit to sanction him or otherwise take him to task? Not gonna hold my breath on that.
There’s also the issue that the person being threatened is far more capable of violence than the person doing the threatening and will happily (or not) help the threatening jackass to a heapin’ helpin’ of whoopass. I have witnessed this phenomenon a few times and it is a wonderful thing to behold.

Might I suggest contacting Kim Dine, Chief of the US Capitol Police, and ask him why he hasn’t arrested Rep. Grimm for threatening to kill someone on the grounds of the Capitol?

Here’s the contact number for USCP: (202) 224-1677

If someone wants to try arguing that Congress’ members can’t be arrested, I’d like to point out that Congressman Raul Grivalda was arrested last October for blocking traffic when he participated in an immigration-policy protest.

I’ll go with the latter unfortunately. But, this went far enough and had enough public heat that got on his ass quickly like a green laser on his puckered asshole that he changed his tune very quickly after a brief non-denying denial period which made the laser heat up radically and proceeded to burn deep into his bowels and make his stomach turn along with those of his handler’s, wrangler’s and lackey assholes.

I think it might be pretty much over by now and cooling since the Brady Bunch Hawaii Holiday episode, “The Tiki Caves” finale is on TV today on a certain Land of the Free, Inc. channel. But after that’s over, the collective heat will probably once again collectively target his burned, puckered asshole again. Time will tell if the heat reaches a magnitude that frightened him into submission in the first place and will lead to talk of resignation, etc. or if he’ll simply run out his term and become another Fox “News” contributor and tea bagger anti-hero.
