You are bragging about how correct you were upon immediately seeing the video after someone doxxed her and you used that information to prove how great you are at determining mental illness. You brought the doxxed information to the thread, whether you figured out who she was or not.
I challenge you to find another forum that discussed this event with 1) more respect and 2) without doxxing the subject as has been done here. The event was clearly newsworthy (I mean, it’s everywhere), and if anything I’m generally pleased this discussion managed to go the way it has.
When I see someone being an utter jerk in public, I do not automatically assume this means that they must be mentally ill, just as I do not automatically assume such when a gunman starts shooting in a public place.
This is because I know that the vast majority of people with mental illness do NOT engage in these behaviors.
Absolutely no argument there, I have massive respect for the editors here. But in this case I think they messed up. I think at this point it’s pretty hard to argue otherwise unless you believe that posting a video of a mentally ill person for the lulz is ok.
I knew within the first few seconds of the video that she was schizophrenic. But unfortunately I’ve had a bit of experience with it from a friend who went down this path so maybe I’m more sensitive to it. And from experience I can tell you that her whole family goes through hell taking care of her even without all this attention.
And of course BoingBoing isn’t the only one to blame for posting this, but now that everyone has a cellphone camera with them at all times a bit of dialog about this issue is, I think, appropriate. And I don’t mean only on BoingBoing.
Sure, I appreciate the position and I’m not arguing for/against the post itself, but the discussion surrounding it. Editorial decisions for posts other than my own are above my pay grade
Oh hey! I didn’t notice you were staff! Massive thank you’s for all the great work you do. My favorite site on the whole of the intershnitzel for like 15 years now. And hopefully it’s clear that I’m only bringing this up in the spirit of stirring up some thought about the issue. And to bulid my gif collection.
You don’t know, you think based on a some limited personal experience. I too have a friend that is schizophrenic as well as his girlfriend that is also schizophrenic. I also majored in psychology (but did not get a masters or go on to practice clinically). I don’t think she is mentally ill. I think she is an asshole much like another friend of mine that I mentioned above. But I am not a professional psychologist. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe you are wrong. It would be pretty egotistical of me to expect everyone on the internet to base their response to this video on my unprofessional opinion. So how about you police your behavior based on your opinions and let others police themselves based on their opinions of this person’s behavior?
The comment that you “knew within the first few seconds” is the objectionable bit. The fact that you had your armchair Psych analysis confirmed by the Internet is irrelevant.
