I guess that the Boys has hyper violence; though it thends to be fast, and not dwell in the carnage too much. I feel that a live action version of Invincible that recreates the meat grinder fights between the superhumans, would be a definitely different prospect.
I feel like the mainstream ultraviolence thing is already tapped out (and TBH a short pause on superheroes might be a good idea), but that doesn’t mean studios will stop doing it.
I quite liked the seasons to date of The Boys, and sure, some of the grand guignol violence served the dramatic stakes, but also, c’mon. It’s mostly there for giggling bros to endlessly replay clips of someone’s dick getting blown up at each other. Which is fine, but there are good reasons to confine that stuff to Jackass and pornhub in 99% of cases.
It’s like with Verhoeven movies, where I constantly hear highbrow talk about how the gleeful sadistic violence is actually a sophisticated commentary on mainstream audiences. Only, every single Total Recall fan just likes it for the parts where the people’s eyes pop out and that one girl has three tits brah. So, like, if a sophisticated commentary falls in the forest and no one hears, does it make a difference?
Probably they won’t stop.
