Russia invades Ukraine

We know that way more people die in war from disease and starvation than any other cause.

And the population is hunkered down together with each other to try and protect themselves. They have a 35% COVID vaccination rate. Vaccines of all kinds need to be prioritized as part of relief efforts.

Jesus. That is something I had not even thought about.

I’ve been thinking about this Seinfeld clip for a couple days now, just thought I’d post it to add a little levity to such a gloomy topic…

How about using it to get the truth into Russia.

Yeah, comparing a person who is building infrastructure (and was doing so well before the conflict started) to someone who is putting his physical safety on the line when he most certainly did not have to is gross. Any opportunity for Musk to pretend he cares about freedom, I guess.

For sure.

We all keep forgetting that there is STILL a pandemic because we keep getting distracted by worse news… :pensive:

The explosions are apparently in an area where there’s also a large airbase and aviation fuel reserve. If Russia hit the fuel tanks you’d get that on-going roaring and pulsing light.

Russia doesn’t have air superiority yet as it expected, 3 days in, so it makes sense that they’d target a base like that. While it’s not good news it’s also not the massive strategic bombing attack on residential neighbourhoods in Kyiv that everyone truly fears might come. If that happens we’re into Grozny territory.

I later saw some tweets about the Russians hitting a fuel depot and a pipeline, I am pretty sure one of those videos were from that. I am worried that mass bombing is coming, especially after reading that thermobaric launchers have been spotted…

That could be a big problem for Tsar Volodya. He rode into power in part on the public’s grievance that the West (and the West alone – this part is false) was responsible for so many Russians being imiserated in the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet empire. A lot of people there remember vividly how bad it was. While he’ll try to blame the West again there are 25 years of Internet access between now and then. The majority of Russians won’t fall for it and will know exactly who’s responsible this time.

The New York Times says:

Dmitri A. Medvedev, the vice chairman of Mr. Putin’s security council, speculated in a social-media post on Saturday that Russia might reintroduce the death penalty or seize foreigners’ assets in Russia as a response to Western sanctions. “The interesting part is only beginning … ,” he wrote.

which not only affirms that he still has some power, but that he regards the death penalty as “interesting”.

Darn, he’s a couple of days too late, and in the middle of the wrong administration, to be auditioning for a spot on the US Supreme Court.

I don’t know if this has shown up yet. I have not noticed the news, and it is impossible to search the thread for “twitter” and come up with anything useful. Apologies if it’s dupe news

They aren’t “flamethrowers”, they are thermobaric rockets. That linked headline is absolutely terrible. So bad that it’s “not even wrong” as the saying goes.

In addition to all the usual horrors, this war is laying bare the really dreadful state of the media. So much misinformation, bad clickbait headlines, fake videos, etc, etc. It’s becoming impossible to know what’s true.

That said, thermobaric rockets are really horrible and I pray they are not used.

It’s the “Mad King” scenario

Putin has been in power for decades, and yet for some reason he has gone from zero to Stalin in a remarkably short time

Well, maybe not zero

Today Putin’s moved from deliberately poisoning individuals to gratuitously poisoning the planet. See also:

Ukraine’s State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection warned the explosion, which it said looked like a mushroom cloud, could cause an “environmental catastrophe”.
