Say hello to the world's first smart salt lamp

Best WWII movie ever. Oddball probably is the kind of guy who’d have a salt lamp in his tank though, so mixed messages there.

I’ll say hello to a lamp the same day I say goodbye to my poop when I flush it.

Oh good. I’m so relieved. I’ve been looking for something to balance my health since forever.

The pink or orange colour is due to trace amounts of harmless haematite (iron oxide) which forms in the strongly oxidising conditions you expect in desiccating conditions required to lay down salt. It’s the same reason desert sandstones, like those of South Devon and Cheshire are ludicrously brightly coloured.

In anycase, it’s far from “pure” salt for any definition of purity that could possibly make sense.

Depends on the wavelength.

…UV radiation above 10 eV (wavelength shorter than 125 nm) is considered ionizing…

A little part of me loves the gall, the fallacious banter, and the hucksterism. Most of me hates the fact that people lack basic science knowledge and don’t practice critical thinking.

Looks like this advertisement really dialed it in. Other Himalayan salt lamps make grander claims.

Is smart salt anything like smart matter? Can this thing assume different forms?

My partner had a thing for these a few years ago, partly for the look, partly for the woo.

Note: salt is hydrophilic. They ended up in little puddles of syrupy brine. Not recommended.

I had a flatmate who wasn’t the best at critical thinking. She had a salt lamp that she said dehumidified the air. One morning she proudly told me that there was no condensation on her window that morning so the salt lamp must have worked. I informed her it had been a warm night, hence the lack of condensation. I’m sure she still believes they are magical.

Ok, if you use a hard-UV light source :-), but those tend to be impractical for reading.

An IOT salt lickstone. Yay.

The Arizona rock salt lamp may not play well here but in the Himilayas? Wow! It is the thing! I hear they are getting, like, $250 for them there.

I’d be surprised if you could make a hole in rock salt with any steel tool, let alone a cheapo one. But that’s OK cuz you can just use water anyway

I think the Sherpa are smart enough to avoid all this western woo.
