Sen. Al Franken Accused of Forcibly Groping Radio Host Leeann Tweeden

Does it make a difference if Tweeden has accepted Franken’s apology and doesn’t want him to resign (provided there are no other victims)?

This is very consistent with what my female friends say. Luckily, for the most part, it’s not the workplace. But they sure have some scary stories from just totally innocuous places like creeps seated next to them on airplanes.

Which reminds me of a story my sister told me. A while back she was flying from LAX to ORD, and some guy got suuuuuuperrr drunk before the flight, and was heavily macking on a gal while they were waiting to board. Turns out he ended up seated next to her, and continued this bad behavior. At one point, he passed out and slumped over leaning against the unfortunate lady. My sister being the ornery lady she is (and sitting across the Aisle) took the opportunity to make friends with her, and then they took turns taking selfies with his unconscious body. The flight attendants were amused.

Related: In college a good friend of mine would try and mess with me by talking about how hot my sister was. Didn’t affect me in the slightest. He asked me why that was, which I said, “Hey, go hit on her and see what happens. Be my guest. I just want to be there to see it.”

It helps a great deal. It shows:

  1. Franken was honest enough to admit his fault
  2. He made efforts to address the issue directly to the person wronged
  3. She found his efforts genuine enough to leave it at that.
  4. There is no kind of conspiracy to hush her up or get her discredited or out of the way

Another idea would be a large donation to say womens’ shelters.

I would like to see him out of Congress. I would like to see all the scumbags go. I would like the message to go out loud and clear that abusing the humans around you is a career-killing move, no matter whose team you play for.

Doesn’t matter that I’m politically aligned with Franken.

No, just those whose politics we don’t like.

Exactly. Thank you.

Copied from Today’s newest sexual assaulter: Al Franken - #46 by the_borderer

Why am I getting a feeling of deja vu around this? Why is my memory reminding me of the Socialist Workers Party (UK) and Comrade Delta?

Yet it was the suggestion that the leadership had protected one of its own, and persuaded hundreds of members to collude in a cover-up, that convinced many people it was irredeemably corrupt.

Just a warning to everyone trying to persuade us that Al Franken did no wrong (which even he isn’t doing).

There already is a way for her to get a big check.

Yes, because it matters? How do you stop people from getting away with it now and in the future if you don’t look back and admit the problem in the past?

Regardless of whether folks think he should resign or not, his apology was a refreshing change. No weasel words. No ifs, no buts. It’s the first one I’ve since the whole Weinstein story broke that shows any empathy for his victims:

“For instance, that picture. I don’t know what was in my head when I took that picture, and it doesn’t matter. There’s no excuse. I look at it now and I feel disgusted with myself. It isn’t funny. It’s completely inappropriate. It’s obvious how Leeann would feel violated by that picture.”

There’s no consent required for a photograph to be taken, the photo may make him an asshole, but it doesn’t make him a criminal.

She LIED about the photo. If you bother to look at it, you would see that he isn’t touching her, there is clear distance between his hands and her body as evidenced by the shadows. Also, the photographer has said that she was in fact playing dead and was in on the joke. If she feels like she was violated during the kissing part of their routine, I believe her. But take it with a big grain of salt when you consider the lie about the photo, and the fact that she is also a right wing talking head for fox. Also, he made a very considerate apology, which she accepted. So no, he should not resign immediately.

She actually was playing dead and was in on the joke, she lied about the circumstances of the photo, in which he is in fact not even touching her.

Any source on the claim by the photographer that she was in on the joke?

Do you have a source for that? Makes this into even less of an issue if true (depending on the veracity of the skit-rehersal part of her story).

Thought I would have something clever or thought-provoking to add to this conversation but all I can think of is ‘goddamn it!’

I mean this only as a joke, but there were upsides to having eunuchs run the government.
