there’s plenty of weaseling in the headlines today (e.g. NBC News: “Shark attacks rise after 3 years of decline”) to help the story register as “attack of the sharks” rather than “pandemic statistical rebound”.
Yes, that really does makes sense.

Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water.
Up on the Cape in Mass. they are seeing a significant rise in great whites. If it isn’t the cold AF water keeping people out of the surf, it’s the carnivores cruising a frisbee throw off shore. After years of seal protection there, the word is out where the best buffet on the East Coast is located and it’s five stars on the shark Yelp.
I got really good at balancing on a paddle board over the summer after seeing sharks 3 out 5 outings at the same beach in Maine. Two swam under me and one was eating off in the distance. The rental shop didn’t really want to talk about it. I didn’t bother bringing it up with the mayor.
