I wouldn’t call it thinking what happens up there but there is common theme: People who don’t understand criticisms of racism and so don’t know how it really works. The kind of people that get upset when you mention the word black when referring to the colour/shade(*) or who think a European making nasi goreng is cultural appropriation.
Such people have often been called out for their own racist behaviour but never really got the point and therefor got extremely careful and uncertain, like somebody driving in a country where they don’t know all the traffic rules and can’t read the signs.
This woman knows she can’t talk about Asians or Asian culture without being called out for it so she can’t understand why others can.
This! That is actually exactly what they did when she was a kid. Go see a movie, then get Chinese food.
Since my family does Christmas (and I usually cook), one year as a bit of a joke, and because I was being a bit lazy, we ordered Chinese to acknowledge all of the extended family Christmas traditions.
