Mreow!
OâConner sounds like an old school radical feminist who likes to shame women with any sexuality.Itâs just pure slut shaming. I see nothing wrong in Mileyâs sexuality on display - rather, I find the cultural appropriation problematic (black back up singers with big butts who Miley sexualises and slaps their butts.
I thought the hidden problem was that, given she was going to schlock everybody, she did not master the situation like Madonna would have. She didnât steal the show from Robin Thicke or whatever his name is (my, hasnât he put on weight!) - she played passive to his importance. The producers had a tough time deciding which cameras to have on - Thinke or her. They didnât settle either, they kept switching and catching cameras panning into position etc.
It showed she was playing inside the confines of showbiz rules, which is why sheâs going to run into a wall. She didnât have the balls to completely blow the show up and steal everybodyâs thunder, which she could have done. She got a lot of attention, but showed weakness, real weakness.
She needs to read some Machiavelli. If sheâs going to do the flaunting thing, go all the way, donât stop halfway.
Do you really think all acts of public nudity are the same and have the same meaning and that being critical of any woman who takes her clothes off is slut-shaming? Do you really think that the insane train wreck at the VMAs was âempoweringâ and was just putting her sexuality on display? To what end? How was that empowering for her, or anyone else? Really? Cause Iâm not buying that this was an act of empowerment at all and I really donât see how anyone can say that. Sheâs just trying to shock because that âsells recordsâ.
Is that the new standard of empowerment for women to aspire to? Making a bunch of money by taking off our clothes? Really? Cause I thought it was about controlling out bodies, sexualities, futures, careers, and shaping a world where we are respected for who we are, not how skinny and perfect we are, and how much money we can make a bunch of middle aged men.
I agree that slut-shaming sucks, but thatâs not what is going on here. OâConner has a long history in the music industry, and as such I think has a good idea about what itâs like as a young woman to try and navigate that system. She makes a good point that there is probably someone whispering into her ear that this is a good idea, and making this young woman think these are her ideas.
Nah, Only if OâConner stuck her nose in it without prompting. This letter was written in the context of Miley comparing her video to her alleged role model OâConner. OâConner said as much 2 or 3 times. Comparing Wrecking Ball to a hallmark in OâConners career gives OâConner every right to define her position on these matters. You have to remember, Miley made the comparison. OâConner clarified her position. You may not like how she did it but she had every right to and I loved OâConnerâs letter.
You know, itâs more like a throne.
Just sayinâ!
Yap. Nothing more than slut shaming- on top of hetronormative rant " your body is yours and your boyfriend". It is highly offensive to people who might not fit into any of the hetronormative sexuality. Who said anything about empowering? I said it was slut shaming. I am not commenting or assuming to know what Miley intended or felt. Not really that interested.
Except that âŚdoesnât Miley have a boyfriend? Isnât the letter to Miley? Am I supposed to refer to my bossâs wife as his âlife partnerâ now? This is a fine example of PC run amok. Anyone who is highly offended by that remark needs to seriously reconsider.
And Cyrus is NOT being hetronormative in her act? Come on, now. She is reproducing the kind of sexuality that completely conforms to the patriarchal ideals for young womenâaggressive, yet passive, an object for menâs desires.
Though I think youâre right about the âyour boyfriendâ comment⌠fair enough for me. But her body is hers, and displaying it is not necessarily an act of empowerment if that is what is being used to sell a product⌠Plus, letâs not push out women who do conform to gender norms either.
Also, I think this sums up some of my thoughts on public displays of sexuality in the context of the music/entertainment industry. (âHey girls, ainât you heard weâre more concerned/ about the hegemony, than the women
Hey girls pull it down, thereâs money/ câmon babe, just a little/ Pull it down, stick it out, open up/ just a little babe, just a little babyâŚâ)
NO, I think Nada_cat is correct on that point. Her body does not belong to anyone else but her, even if she does have a boyfriend. I donât think thatâs PC run amok. Thatâs reality. do you really think a relationship means that you all of a sudden become someoneâs property, because that is what that means.
And I think you should probably refer to your bosses wife in whatever way makes them feel comfortable. If they feel comfortable with husband/wife, than great. They are married, presumably? Iâm married, and donât have a problem with wife, despite the baggageâŚ
who knows what her sexuality is - I am glad you know so much about her sexual life.
She has talked endlessly about being engaged to her boyfriend and at what point has she ever display any sort of queer sexual identity? Arenât you making assumptions about her sexuality, too? And about how much of what she does is a stage persona versus Cyrus as a person. She is in the business of creating a spectacle and artifice. That doesnât mean that something of herself (or much of herself) isnât out there on display, but in fact NONE of us really know. OâConner was talking specifically about how the music industry works, including the exploitation of womenâs sexuality.
again, I never said anything about empowerment. I donât also swing the other way and assume she is automatically a victim either or that she needs to change . If we are gonna make fuss about it, then we should attack the music industry. No need to shame her or assume to understand her feelings or where she is coming from.

who knows what her sexuality is
[/quote]?
Everyone. Iâm not in the business of second guessing everyoneâs sexual preferences. Apparently neither is Sinead. You can have at it.
not that I like Miley at ALL- I donât . I really really donât. LOL
apparently, she was licking some metal bits- so maybe something to do with droids??
I agree we should attack the music industry for this sort of thing. Which is part of what OConner does in her letter. She responded specifically to a comment Cyrus made about being influenced by her music and that her video was influenced by Nothing Compares⌠which is stupid on its face. The two videos have NOTHING in common. AT ALL. I really donât think that OâConner expressing concern about Cyrus, given how many young women in recent years have gone off the rails because of the pressure they are under, is stepping over the line here.
âŚand we donât want to offend the droids now. Do we?
I have no idea. I donât think I have ever been with a droid. though one never knows and certainly, I am open to the experience.
