No, when an idiot is smoking a cigarette while pumping gas, you immediately douse her with a bucket of water Asking her politely to extinguish her cigarette only reveals that you are a passive observer of life and this situation needs the exact opposite.

In the US, especially where I live, you worry that the person you’re dousing is both not a passive observer of life, and someone who carries a loaded gun. If they’re stupid and irresponsible enough to casually smoke around a gas pump, then I don’t trust them to assess situations calmly without resort to violence. The path of least resistance is to use your words.

I know perfectly well how quick a flare up can happen, but I don’t get into fistfights. The physics in both cases are unfavorable.
