As well as the obvious parallels to The Handmaid’s Tale, this also brings to mind two other novels I have read in recent years:
Chuck Palahniuk’s Adjustment Day and Chris Beckett’s America City.
Seriously, if you’re pro-choice and live in one of these states, look to get out as soon as possible.
It’s only going to get worse.
This has been brought up many times before, but aside from state governments, the Red/Blue divide is a myth. The divide is urban vs. rural, educated v. not, and even these are not monolithic. I am not sure there is anyplace to run.
I hope the decision overturning today is 74-6. Though we can count on the “moderate” Democrats to fight against democracy tooth and nail.
Senator Warren’s statement:
Thomas’ concurring opinion is a masterpiece of judicial activism fuckery. He’d overturn the right to contraception, same sex marriage, and freedom to do what you want in the bedroom. His rationale is that “substantive due process” protects no fundamental rights, so all cases decided on that basis should be reconsidered and thrown out.
What would the benefit of leaking be to keep Roberts in line? Losing his opinion would just prevent a clear 5-4 opinion, versus the mushy 6-3ish / 5-4ish opinion we ended up with. My guess would have been that someone other than Roberts was wavering, in particular on the broader issue – the specific case is chump change in the grander agenda.
I vaguely recall speculation (that I can’t place) that Kavanaugh of all people was waffling, though I don’t have any evidence to back that up.
The fact that a Black justice with a white wife can feel safe with cutting exactly the right holes in the Constitution without affecting his life at all tells you how deep the roots of this judicial insurrection go. He doesn’t have to worry…that should worry everyone else.
I’d believe it. But I’m questioning the motive for the leak. If it was to keep someone in line, I don’t think the person being kept in line was Roberts, since it wouldn’t have any effect on the big prize if he assented, partially assented, or fully dissented.
It might not have been to keep someone in line. It could have been a clerk who had an abortion. It could have been to get people prepared for the response. It could have been a hundred different things.
