SF writers have been doing variations on “America elects a demagogue who seizes power and becomes dictator for life” stories for 75 years or more. I’ll bet none of those writers would in a million years have dreamed that when America finally did elect a would be dictator as president, he would turn out to be too incompetent to seize power successfully.
(I know, there’s two more years before the next election. Somehow given the past two years I don’t think anyone in charge down there is even remotely competent enough to stage a coup before 2020).
I think your second item is really two things, but I guess you could combine them by running a candidate that appeals to those two quite different groups, and frankly that’s what I’m hoping for.
Someone capable of speaking both to voters concerned about the economy and consolidation of wealth in fewer and fewer hands, and to voters concerned about the destruction of the environment that makes human life possible, could be a winning candidate.
Plenty of scope to cover those bases with the same platform.
There’s an incredible lack of discussion in any circles of which I’m aware, of the fact that socialism, downward wealth redistribution, and sustainability should be absolute requirements of any notions that deserve to be considered as economically sound.
I happen to be reading The Watchers by Shane Harris, and according to him, Iran-Contra came to light as it did because Reagan couldn’t remember “his lines” (talking points) when talking to the press, due to his worsening Alzheimers, as you said.
My guess is Nov 10, coinciding with the military parade. That will truly be the point of no return, and the beginning of a new era, as our troops, our defenders, salute their master revealed.
If the midterms go well for the GOP and Kavanaugh is on the SCOTUS it will only add to the sense of a triumphal parade for Vlad, effectively and visibly marking the beginning of the end of liberal democracy in the U.S.
