Tesla just announced a... DeLorean Monster Truck?

When I first saw it this morning, my first thoughts were “damn, that’s ugly”, and “who moved the poly count slider on the rendering farm to the bottom?”

Admittedly, there’s some interesting features- the air suspension is one, the fancy-pants ‘let’s store a ramp in the tailgate’ gimmick is another (bonus if they have a means to keep it working after running a quadrunner that’s covered in mud over it without it jamming up).

However, the cabin is… not inviting, especially for Tall, Fat, Leggy bastards like myself.

the exterior gives me pause as well, and not just in the aesthetics department, but rather in the ‘how much of a pain in the nethers will repairs be in the event some chucklehead decides to back into me’ area.

And finally- if I have a load in the back that requires me to put the tailgate down for travel (like hauling around full sheets of plywood), how are my rear lights going to operate? from those renders, it looks like I’m screwed in that department as well.

Stockholders might call it… reckless.

Why should a Tesla ever be repaired? Wouldn’t it be cheaper for the manufacturer to just send you a new car?

@cepheus42

I would love an electric pickup

I think there is an opportunity for an electric off road vehicle which you can drive down a boat ramp, and underwater to your destination.

Will it have the same Not an Autopilot as a regular Tesla?

That feature where you can summon your car to you when in a parking lot should make for an entertaining video when the truck is parked off road in a dense forest.

Why not? Land Rover has already done a “shit, I don’t know how to drive off-road, please do it for me” mode.

I’m not against it. I look forward to watching the truck navigate a wild terrain.

In the Tesla this mode should be actived by a button labeled: Bro!

I had a flash of where is that guy now.

Most resent I found was:

In May 2011, Washington Post reported that Meyer was enrolled at law school in Florida after the incident gave him “a taste of the system”[11] and has written a book about his experience.

Wasn’t that in a bond movie? And yes, it was a wedge!

Yeah though I was thinking more about off roading along the bottom. But the car would have to flood. No way can you carry enough ballast out of the water to keep air inside the car. So I thought something more like a mini moke or an old military jeep.

Downforce. LOTS of downforce.

Someone needs to shoop it to have low-res poly looking textures. Add a lens flare, flat horizon with 2d mountains in the background, and a 1996 copyright on the lower corner.

Is it stealth? Can johnny law measure just how much like a bat out of hell the thing is going?

This is clearly the bastard offspring of a Hummer and a DeLorean. In other words, completely unnecessary and awful.

With the tailgate down and extended you have a 4x8 platform

Annnd bingo, lots of electric car news from the L.A. Auto Show:
