As I remember it, he first came to my attention as one of Reagan’s NIH hatchet men, helping to trivialize AIDS/HIV which caused him to be burned in effigy at various AIDS awareness events… but then he responded admirably to the criticism, sinking a significant portion of his career into administrating meaningful and productive HIV research efforts.
Caveat: I didn’t look anything up. This is just how I remember it happening at the time, when friends were dying horribly. Maybe I’m wrong and he really is the demon that half the media claims he is, or the saint the other half says he is. But to my mind he’s neither, to me he’s a skilled administrator and a competent politician, an intelligent guy who earns his pay.
