I hate this so much. Job training is what we have trade schools and internships for. I hate that this country has reduced higher education to nothing more than a required line item on a resume.

I think that’s part of it, for sure. But I also think that these kinds of conspiracy theories directly grew out of white supremacist thinking - the whole idea that there is a conspiracy aimed at white people to “replace” them as at the top of the racial hierarchy… I think it was James Baldwin who said that if people think they’re white, he couldn’t talk to them.

I usually write this up to ingroup-outgroup thinking, much more so that intelligence per se Sadly, educated,. intelligent people can be much more effective at rationalizing otherwise incomprehensible positions and actions. And have a much easier time convincing themselves that they are correct in those justifications. They are, after all, Very Smart (R).

It’s code for “the Jews”… it’s almost always code for “the Jews”. It’s all just gotten a modern veneer of “sci-fi”… which makes sense, right? The concept of aliens is a modern concept, so they are mapping alien lizard invaders onto older fears used to ensure white loyalty across classes. And of course, the satanic pedophile cult is just warmed over satanic panic.

They’re already a minority, dying at more than three times the rate of non-MAGAts. At some point, all their illegal machinations (like gerrymandering) won’t be enough to maintain power against the much larger majority.

Which is why they have changed their approach to out and out authoritarianism. Anything like a functioning democracy is a death sentence for their kind, so they must kill it first. Otherwise the dreaded “others” will take over, dontcha know?

IME also there are a lot of people “pretending” to be “crazy” while feeling they have stumbled onto the cleverest way to… basically say “Jews run the country and need to be killed, white women need to be forcibly put back into the home and controlled as breeding stock, gays need to be euthanized if visible or kept completely closeted otherwise, and non-whites need to be genocided or imprisoned to provide forced labor so our white economy can flourish again” while seeming like they’re just being incoherent.
To me asking which of them “don’t really mean that because they’re crazy enough to believe in lizard people” and which of them “really mean that and are using the subconscious fears of the more easily manipulated to direct their focus to the desired targets” is a distinction without a difference.
It frustrates me to no end after literally watching local white supremacists pivot to this method for over a decade that people still are so hesitant to see it just because
*“But they’re dumb lol and I’m smart”" is soooo comforting I guess.

It really does not take a lot of smarts to promote fascism. All the old prejudices and grievances are right at hand. You just need a new way to position it and you’re gold. As long as we keep clinging to these old ideas about race, gender, sexuality, belonging, nationality, identity, etc, the more that real democracy will continue to be elusive.

I think a lot of people really just believe this is “hate for hate’s sake” and “a bunch of idiots” when in reality it is a group of people who are planning a new economy where being a well connected white man is no longer the best thing to be to have power over one’s own life and body… but the only viable thing to be to have power over one’s life and body. Because once many of our white ancestors adopted that line and even though it worked so poorly for them and brought us all so much net suffering and death that hundreds of years later we’re still struggling with the consequences… they were, at the very least, rich from it.

Low education is also typical of the followers of authoritarians. While the leaders of the SS were often more educated than the average German, the troops were less educated than the average German. Obedience, loyalty to the leader and physical strength were their chief qualifications. The same pattern seems consistent across time and across national boundaries.
