Ugh.
I hope you stopped those conversations right away. Sheesh.
Tiresias, is that you?
I am including a lifetime of experience, because currently at my age, men on the street literally don’t see me. It’s amazing how quickly I become visible to them when they start pulling this stuff on my girls in front of me, though.
It’s not a meme, it’s a reality for many, many, many women.
Stop telling us to talk about issues we face in our daily life. Stop telling us to shut up.
There is nothing polite about commanding a stranger to smile for your own selfish gratification.
@Melizmatic: I have also hissed at commands for smiles. More often, I’ve reflexively blurted out “go fuck yourself”.
a) so glad I don’t work with you
and
b) I found 2 women that agree with me so all you other women are wrong is not impressive as an argument
c) I might call you a fucking retard and you might call me a faggot but at least I understand that if I make unwanted sexual advances toward you that you and everyone else in the room will see it as unacceptable
d) again, so glad I don’t work with you. Turning “someone is wrong on the internet” into bugging 8 of your coworkers is seriously annoying behavior.
I guess we’re a bit better than twitter, since only about 2 of the guys posting here believe that a type of harassment that they have never experienced a) doesn’t happen, and b) if it did happen, it’s not that big a deal
note: one of those guys seems to have deleted his post. yay?
If the man is a low-wage retail worker at WalMart or a similar chain, both men and women undoubtedly will tell a man to smile. Supervisors will threaten firing if they don’t. Not disparaging women workers, but this is an issue for working class of whatever sex.
I am a cis woman who rents to low-wage workers, female and male. What these people go through to earn their wages is both appalling and illegal.
That said, bring on the female Joker and arm her with whatever she needs and the idiots deserve in their faces. We need her desperately.
yay.
I kind of feel like that ‘the best Joker is the woman Joker who snaps after a lifetime of being told to “smile, baby” by shitty men’ is not a very good idea.
The point of the Joker is that he, or she, is a villain, and an unreasonable, unhinged one to boot. Women being pissed off at being told to smile more is entirely reasonable, which makes it a bad origin for a villain. It’s superficially compelling, but bad on a deeper level.
Now, if instead of Joker, you used a new character, that would work a lot better if you ask me.
Well, thanks for pointing that out, but as @MalevolentPixy already noted it’s entirely different when one is at work, especially in a customer service capacity. That’s NOT what most women are talking about when we have conversations about being told to ‘smile,’ often by complete strangers.
I’ve had random-ass dudes in public demanding that I “smile” for them ever since I was 7 fucking years old; like it’s some sort of form social payment which men are automatically ‘owed’ simply because I happen to be female, and I have the “audacity” to occupy the same public space in the physical world that they do.
FUCK THAT NOISE.
*Edited for typos.
I don’t necessarily agree, real world killers often have an entire reasonable start to their troubles. Bad parents, emotional abuse, etc and them lashing out is not unexpected… how they cope with their environment and troubles is what can turn a seemingly normal person into a monster. There’s nothing to say a female Joker couldn’t take a path like this, having an initial snap after dealing with a lifetime of shitty men and then going on to do worse and worse things. A female Joker could look at society at large, how so much of it is built on sexist toxic attitudes and decide that she’d rather cause nihilistic destruction than be part of it. It’s not too far from what the regular Joker already does.

I couldn’t agree more.
