Ages ago, I had a DM put a must-have item inside a GC in a situation that didn’t allow time for killing it. We tied a rope to the toughest character and they dove into the GC to get the item, then we hauled them out. Took a couple tries, but it worked!
By the original rules, that was the point. Killing and looting, oh my!
