Without question, you are right. But you know what…someone will have to lead us to do this.
As an American, I wouldn’t put us in that driver’s seat anymore. We’ve proven that we are, at the very best, a country that every 4-8 years undergoes a complete psychotic episode, after which we spend years apologizing and barely papering over what we did.
Sort of like the people on the street are leading us to change our systems of policing. BLM is a leaderless movement, in the sense that no one single person speaks for it, but rather multiple voices do. An organizer is not the same as a top down leader.
Ella Baker is likely instructive here, a woman who did not lead, but organized for the entire community. She did that by empowering people on the ground. that is more what we need.
