Pretty hard to “defend the faith” from a guy who disagrees with your views when the faith in question says that guy is always right.

I don’t think that’s actually what they claim. In fact I think it’s kind of seen as an arsehole move to claim it these days at all. Lots of catholics disagree with different popes and teach things that are different.
The entire history of Christianity is different people claiming god told them the real deal. Pretty much starting with Paul who never met someone who actually knew Jesus and heard his teachings that he didn’t vehemently disagree with.
I love Harry Dean Stanton in the Last Temptation of Christ telling Jesus that he’s glad he met him as he’s nothing, Paul’s Jesus is so much better. It’s pretty theologically accurate, if not historically of course.
I think that’s only when the Pope says specifically that he’s speaking “ex cathedra”.
And that it only started in the late 1800’s.
