It’s at least a slight nod to reality for Brooks to label it “leftish” rather than “leftist.” When you’re hanging off the right edge of the world by a thread, everything is “leftish.”
The right to vote is leftist. Any fascist government absolutely must end any pretense of popular input. They are built around authoritarian, strict control of everything. Also, in our present circumstances, the right to vote would essentially end the GQP stranglehold on power. So yeah, accurate. But also way more telling than I suspect he intended.
The fascists are the very end of the political spectrum though. I mean, you for instance also get libertarians who believe everyone should be free to vote, it just shouldn’t do anything because everything ought to be run by businesses anyway. I know the GQP has moved way past them but I still don’t like the idea of calling them leftist.
Brooks has been trotting out the old line that voter suppression laws do not actually suppress the vote, or they have not in the past, so we should not worry so much about voter suppression laws, but frankly, it’s one of those things that you don’t want to WAIT for them to be effective!
Not anymore… they have pretty much yanked the overton window so far to the right that even people like Brooks look leftist from their perspective.
Yep. The entire process is set up as a one way ratchet. Can’t go forward- can only go back.
"OK, so, yeah, it turns out that all those things they’ve been doing all these decades, they actually were working up to a Chinese-style system, which has a “democratic vote”, but only people approved by the party are allowed to run for election, and if any of them vote against the way the Party and the Leader wants them to, then there’s a byelection because the previous candidate was mysteriously found guilty of corruption and child molestation and executed because all the judges were appointed by the Party and the Leader. So that’s a thing that happened. But still: there is a vote, technically, so you can’t say it’s not democratic!
“No, really. You can’t say it’s not, 'cause if you do your neighbour will call the Internal Security Police, and you will be mysteriously found guilty of corruption and child molestation.”
The alleged 2017 deal between Google and Facebook to kill header bidding, a way for multiple ad exchanges to compete fairly in automated ad auctions, was negotiated by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and endorsed by both Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (now with Meta) and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, according to an updated complaint filed in the Texas-led antitrust lawsuit against Google.
Texas, 14 other US states, and the Commonwealths of Kentucky and Puerto Rico accused Google of unlawfully monopolizing the online ad market and rigging ad auctions in a December, 2020, lawsuit. The plaintiffs subsequently filed an amendment complaint in October, 2021, that includes details previously redacted.
“ It occurred to me this morning that all the DATA JOURNALISTS and assorted THAT’S JUST MATH types who weigh in on politics these days are similar to the skeptics/New Atheists movement of the aughts. Just a bunch of dumb dorks who think that by asserting that they are smart and not bound by the irrational superstitions and narrow ideologies of normal humans, that their every pronouncement is transcendent.”
“ think knowing 3 weeks of a probability/stats class and the ability to make a graph in excel means they are data guys, or whatever.”
“ Also like every dumb asshole who thinks he’s really smart, when they’re proved fucking wrong they just move on to the next nonsense like it never happened.”

Christianity is illegal and a group of Christians is trying to fight back!
Are they fighting back by whining about absolutely everything?
So, I guess win-win for them, right?
