The Gallery of Trump-Inspired Assholes (Part 1)

Hmm, more tea leaves. Seems like this could be a good or a bad portent.

An ex con, sexual harassers, an accused pedophile, a narcissistic senile old Nazi clown … what will they think of next?

He was pardoned, but his conviction still stands, however that doesn’t seem to be a bar to being elected. He might face a Senate vote to expel him, that’s probably complicated.

It is possible for a felon to serve in the U.S. Congress – but the House and Senate can vote to expel any member that colleagues deem unfit or unqualified to serve. And even if Stevens does end up winning the election in Alaska, he faces a probable expulsion vote in the Senate. He says he’ll appeal his conviction, and he has yet to be sentenced.

Speaking as someone who was a fan of Pinker’s academic work on psycholinguistics…

Pinker has been consistently douchetastic for quite some time. He’s been pushing apologia for fascism ever since Trump’s election.

This is a big part of the problem. Not your liking of it, but the fact that he has the reputation of “respected social scientist”. People are bound to give his words more credibility – including the “know nothings” who normally wouldn’t listen to an academic, because he’s saying what they want to hear.

This timeline is not good for my anxiety.

Peter Singer has been making an arse of himself in a similar fashion.

Apart from folks like Mark Bray and George Cicciarello-Maher, US-based academia has not been covering itself in glory lately.

That’s a major part of the problem… he’s seen as the “good academic” not the “bad academic” that is up in the ivory tower looking down their nose at the “common man” and indoctrinating kids into communism, all while receiving a salary that they don’t deserve. Blah…

Because the people who are in positions of power are those willing to stroke the ego of the powerful and to play the game to get into positions where they can wield some influence. We’re tearing the independent academic system down in favor of a corporatized system that rewards sycophantism over intellectual inquiry.

We’re fucked, in other words.
