They had yet to be discovered, in 1534.
There’s a whole other story to be told about the events leading up to the discovery of Js in the wild and their subsequent domestication - but we must leave that for another day.

What is being held to make the top of the “Q”? A snake? Something else? 
This could have been much more gruesome if they had stuck to just one person per letter.
