My father and uncles fought Nazis. Donny Boy may think they fought on the wrong side.
I volunteered for the US Army after Nixon resigned; I worked as 1) radioteletype op, 2) photographer, and 3) field medic. I did not get to shoot people. I did not join for the prospect of shooting people, but because it was my least worst option at a low point in life. It worked.
Donny Boy gives aid and support to enemies waging war on the US. Is his base too stupid to see, or so treasonous that they want the US destroyed?

You seem to have a rather simplistic view of society if your conclusion from observing a system that is designed to pressure economically disadvantaged people into joining the military as a legal way out of poverty (as opposed to robbing a bank) is that “maybe some of them like killing”. Yeah, probably some of them do. So what, that has no significance for the problem at hand.

As a non-American, the country has always seemed that way. The political left in the US is right of the Right in every other industrialized democracy. For example Canada’s rightmost PM ever was probably Steven Harper, and he was left of Obama on policy (if not rhetoric).
