I don’t understand why the Democrats aren’t producing ads like this. “When they go low, we go high” loses elections. It’s time to get into the fight.
It (supposedly) carries more weight with GOP voters coming from GOPers. Remains to be seen if that’s working or not.
Two problems:
-
Trump supporters are primarily English-only. It would be hard to find many that speak Russian
-
Trump supporters don’t like subtitles. That means you have to read while you’re watching TV. they watch TV so they don’t have to read.
There was a time before the 1980s when the party establishment really did fight, and fight hard. Oddly, that was before it became evident (at least to those outside the DNC) that the GOP has always dealt in bad faith since Gingrich.
It’s really aimed at moneyCons and older Rockefeller Republicans who still see the Russians as “godless Commies” (instead of people led by yet another bigoted and thieving autocrat*). I don’t know if there are enough of them left to make a difference, but whatever works.
[* sorry, whataboutists and useful idiots, take your apologias on behalf of Putin and your history-ignorant claims of “McCarthyism” elsehwere]
It’s strange seeing BB promoting the Lincoln Project. I know it’s fun to watch other Republicans “own” Trump or whatever, but these ads are hawkish, neocon propaganda that are outright advocating for the US to expand violent foreign interventions. It’s also a money-making grift for the founders. https://newrepublic.com/article/158344/viral-impotency-lincoln-project
Unlike Trump’s “memory” of Muslims in New Jersey cheering when the towers fell, I have an accurate memory of the Russian Parliament breaking into applause when it was announced that Trump had won the election (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-elections/donald-trump-wins-us-election-russia-putin-result-a7406866.html). I’m amazed that hasn’t been used in ads like this.
The American red scare is so hilarious to me. All that communist iconography and the use of “decadent Americans” as if this was the Soviet Union they were dealing with. It’s an oligarchy, they themselves are more decadent then even Trump. This isn’t the 50s for god’s sake.
This use of communist propaganda is so insufferably dumb.
Eh, Putin has just realized that the veneer of Communism that served him well in the early part of his career isn’t actually necessary for his autocratic ambitions, and it’s a lot easier to enjoy his staggering wealth if he doesn’t even have to pretend to some form of egalitarian marxism. I’ve got no problem, though, with this ad conflating an autocratic former communist with autocratic communists.
My issue here is with the execution. There is so much happening visually that one doesn’t have time to read the baked-in English subtitles. This is valuable only in the sense that it exists, “Hey, did you hear about that faux-Russian Trump election ad?”
Because you’re “a long time reader, first time poster” I’m guessing?
Velcome to BB…
I mean, that’s what Trump thinks the plan is. It think he’ll find he didn’t get exactly what he [was] paid for…
I wish this were funny.
It is for the target demographic.
While I don’t trust the Lincoln Project’s motives beyond dethroning Trump, their ads are certainly more compelling than anything I’ve seen come from the Democrats.
My mom is also a fan of their ads, and shares them with me and my brother.
We both keep reminding her that, even if they are mocking/attacking Trump, that doesn’t make them our friends.
Today he sent us this link with the following caveat:
The Atlantic is awful and some of the writing is utter dogshit, but look who’s a pack of fucking grifters not looking to change a damn thing
Because
- Republicans won’t listen if it’s Democrats trying to convince them that Trump did something bad. Just look at how the impeachment hearings went.
- Democrats don’t need to convince Democratic voters that Trump is bad. Anyone who isn’t already part of Trump’s base already knows that. The Democrats need to convince those voters to turn out for Biden.
You’re on point, but enemy of my enemy or something…
And as @Elmer said:
Any Transformers fans here? This is the same reason why the Decepticons always whipped the Autobots’ asses. Decepticons were looking at the big picture and would try to win at any cost, and the Autobots only win at the end because of plot armor.
When they go low, we go high is noble, but a losing strategy. In real life, we don’t have plot armor…
It’s 100% a play on the title sequence for The Americans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI5lCYHqJbo
