I think that we BoingBoingers (or is BoingBoingians?), as a group, are being too harsh and judgemental. Perhaps these sheriff fellas have hearts of gold with the best of intentions and are just misunderstood.
Wow. Just how hard did I hit my head this morning? (wanders off in search of an ice pack and some aspirin)
Reveals the Feudal basis of the (Dis)united petty fiefdoms of America. There is more chance that your local County Sheriff will interfere with your right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit oh happiness’ than any narcissistic dullard occupying the ‘White House’.
an elected position that lends itself well to graft and patronage.
In some ways, the position of sheriff is similar to how trump sees his office-- a lucrative position, insulated from oversight. Much of the endless fretting about a “unitary executive” revolves around the extent that the Presidential powers should be curtailed by … common sense? ethical obligations? expertise? duty? The constitutional nature of the office protects a malfeasant officer from being fired.
It would be rather neat and tidy if Lester Bruce Sullivan was a sheriff, but alas, he was a (elected) police commissioner.
LOL. Yes. This isn’t unique to Sheriffs, of course, but many political elite break laws and are able to skirt the consequences. And we keep electing them. There are some awful people who keep getting elected to office every year, because the alternative is someone of the party of baby eaters and puppy kickers.
Even I’m not cynical enough to believe this was coincidence. Does anyone else have the feeling that Trump deliberately picks corrupt assholes to represent him in everything? Like, there’s no way sheriffs are this corrupt everywhere… you’d have to go out of your way to find so many bad ones, RIGHT? I’m completely anti-cop, but even I know that they’re not ALL this dirty, so what the hell is going on?
