Theresa May faces a no confidence vote today

He will never tell them that. He does not believe it. He is a leaver, being against what he sees as a capitalist project inhibiting properly elected socialist governments from nationalising industries or offering state aid to those who need it. (And so on.)
I don’t even think he pines for the 60s and 70s - though I get that this was perhaps when he could last credibly thave had any chance of thinking his delusion was achievable.

So would you rather have May as PM over Johnson or the rest of them? Other than Rees-Mogg, of course.

Do you think this gives Labour an in for leadership?

No. See my post above.

And he needs to win a general election first and there is unlikely to be one of those for a long while yet, unless May eventually resigns after Brexit and a new Tory leader decides to call one before the 5 year term is up, and gets a 2/3 vote for one in Parliament. Labour will not win a vote of confidence in the govt (which could otherwise trigger an election) as the DUP will support the govt because they fear Corbyn as much as they fear a customs border in the North Sea.

It would if Labour itself had leadership. Instead its figurehead is yesterday’s man today – a fact that isn’t lost on many inside the party.

That’s another good point. One way or another he’s never going to be PM, but he can’t let go of the dream.

Is there anyone in the party’s left wing – preferably someone under age 55 – who could push this disappointing relic out and get the leadership without selling out completely to the Third-Way Blairites?

For sure - tomorrow should be the day for Labour to capitalise on the fractured Conservative party, but it won’t happen under Corbyn.

Unlikely. Sturgeon already has a job. Parliamentary math is such that you’d need virtually every party except the tories to form a majority government, and Sinn Fein don’t even show up on principle. The UK is kind of fucked.

Choosing which conservative I want to be PM is like choosing which finger I would like to have broken, but if I was forced to choose one MP I would probably go with an unapologetic Europhile like Kenneth Clarke. He’s still shitty in many ways (his actions as a director of British American Tobacco being high up among them), but he is on the left wing of his party.

Kinda feels like having to eat a Shit Sandwich but at least you’re offered cutlery.

Oh, I figured. I was just curious if May staying or being replaced was better or worse.

It can get worse??
Ha, 'course it can, who am I kidding?

I always assume it can get worse.

Good point, but it’s less of an assumption this time, more of a prediction.

Exactly. But Dominic Grieve is another relatively (still a Tory so that’s a loaded adverb) sane voice over Brexit.

Kier Starmer? (Or too Blairite?)

Her staying as PM under the current circumstances is about the best I can realistically imagine. Too many votes for her and she would have looked strong enough to keep the rebels under control, but too many votes against her and she would have been beaten or in such a weak position that she would be forced to resign.

The way things are now she is still PM, but she knows a third of her party wants her gone. It will be a tough four years for her as the rebels will feel empowered, but they won’t have enough power on their own to oppose her.

Ugh… the entire situation is nuts! At this point, I’m not seeing a good out for you lot, other than the people’s vote. I’m sorry. Looks like we’re all sort of up shit’s creek.

Unfortunately we’d have to import a paddle from Europe, so…

100+ MPs who want her gone is plenty to get rid of her if Labour care to assist. Of course those rebels would be voting to remove a tory government, but on the other hand you’d only need about 30 of them to go through with it. Still, pretty unlikely.

However I would not put any money on May finishing her term. I don’t think she’ll last for another couple of years.

Yesterdays man would be a Blairite. Corbyn is last weeks man being given a chance because it was the same day 7 days ago.

Anybody, does this outlay of scenarios in the NYTimes portray an accurate representation of the current situation?
