This fellow lives inside a jet plane. It does not fly.

If he built a home out of a plane where it crashed, it would probably be more structurally sound than this is - the tube isn’t likely to collapse even if the body is broken in half, whereas right now it doesn’t look like it would take much for it to fall off the blocks he’s got it on, which would be pretty disastrous.

He also talks about it being cold (and closing off part of it to retain warmth in the winter). If you were building a living space that size from scratch (especially with such small windows), you could easily make it so well insulated you could warm it with body heat alone.

And he’s actually managed to make it worse by gutting the interior, so it’s even uglier than it needs to be, too. But yeah, as a living space, it’s pretty much the opposite of everything I’d actually want out of one, and he paid a pretty penny for the privilege. It’s a highly eccentric passion of his, which would make it extremely improbable to find someone else who shares it (making both cohabitation and a reasonable resale price outright impossible, I’d say).

I keep thinking of the people who live in the storm drains under Las Vegas, as it’s probably pretty similar in terms of quality of habitation. Issues of resale makes me think of people who do eccentric things to their homes (like turn them into Star Trek space ship interiors) and how much difficulty they have in selling their properties (and the losses they suffer when they do so), even though it’s usually an interest shared by many more people and the houses are actually completely livable. Normally I appreciate such eccentric projects, but it’s such a miserable living space in this case, it’s hard to do so.

The teenage me thinks this is really cool. The adult me focuses on all the weird problems with it. I guess good for him that he never lost that wild teenage dream.

Thinking on it, let me know when a decommissioned space shuttle might be available. Not that I’d likely find or spend the money on it. Kid me loves to dream it though. : )

That middle shell that could open could make a great sundeck. Especially if I can get it to half open and put a jacuzzi in. Then if I could also get one of the storage tanks it would jettison during the launch and make that a two-story house with a pool.

Back also in adult world, likely cheapter to just hire an architect to build something like that. In which case I’d have them just build something better.

Kid me: but maybe this whole thing could be better done with a big decommissioned boat!

Adult me: …that could gradually rust in the rain?

And so it goes…

I have to imagine that there’s the potential for pretty significant levels of exposure to a lot of different chemicals, especially given the condition of the interior.

But if you did want to live inside a decommissioned airplane fuselage, why not make it mobile?

Oof, yeah, I hadn’t even thought of that.
