oh hey remember that post a while ago about how when stores ask for your donation, they arent actually donating the money you give because theyve already made the donation and are just looking to get reimbursed through customers? looks like theyre finally getting in hot water for that deceptive practice

The Health Secretary says it is fine so there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

Here’s a thorough look at the practice:

And not only are you reimbursing the store for their donation, they still take the tax deduction. It stinks like spoilt milk.

I suspect that Safeway is doing the same thing.

Yeah, I’m wondering about Shaw’s, our local grocery store, which is owned by Albertson’s. Haven’t been able to find anything yet…

And Giant. Every time I check out at either of those stores I get harassed for donations.

If the Conservatives see a buck to be made there… then yes. They already have the infrastructure: private prisons.

Yeah, from my reading of it, they make a big “donation” to said cause. In return, they get their accolades from the cause and related tax breaks.
They set up the POS fundraising thing (which, to be fair, is probably helping whatever cause reach a wider audience. But it’s annoying the businesses had to sully the whole thing.)
Every time one of us donates through that POS interface, it goes to reimburse the business for their previous donation, but WE can’t claim it as a tax deduction since it’s not a charitable donation, it’s a donation to a corporation, and no one goes after the business to retroactively withdraw their previous tax break.
In the example in the story I posted, it was a 3 year agreement that CVS would donate or raise $10M.
