This week Trump said he didn't know Prince Andrew. In 2000 Trump said "he's a lot of fun to be with."

Not that I’m trying to make excuses for Prince Andrew, who is probably the most repulsive royal after his dad, the Duke of Edinburgh – but it’s possible he may have thought the age of consent in the USA is 16, as it is in Britain. I gather that before he became Il Supremo, Drumpf often behaved in a manner that would have led visitors to think anything was permissible with young American women.

I get where this point comes from, and I’m not going to accuse you of defending child molesters or anything. I just think we’re way past that. If you are a prince and you are visiting a billionaire and there is a 17-year-old friend of the billionaire (the billionaire has 17-year-old “friends”… really) who apparently wants to have sex with you, you should decline. Even if you really, really believe that the billionaire is a nice person who would never intentionally coerce a teenager to have sex with a 40+ year old man. Even if you really, really believe the 17-year-old is interested in you sexually. Even if you really, really think it is legal to do so.

Take the chance that you are doing harm to the 17-year-old, multiply it by how bad that harm might be, and compare it to how important it is that you have sex with this 17-year-old right now. It’s actually disgusting to me that anyone ever put those things next to each other and thought the latter outweighed the former.

I know that if Prince Andrew genuinely thought all those things I said above it would be hard and upsetting now to say, “I didn’t realize the laws differed in the US and the UK but it was my responsibility to know that. I broke US law by having sex with that girl.” But I don’t really excuse princes for not doing the right thing just because the right thing is hard and upsetting.

Of course in reality I doubt Prince Andrew even gave one single thought to the well-being of a girl who was handed to him like they were and object by someone the prince knew was abusing children.

The age of consent may be 16 here in the UK, but that doesn’t mean that we think that older people going after young people isn’t creepy. That’s before we get into the other consent issues in this case.
