Thousands of Dutch vow to throw rotten eggs at Jeff Bezos’ superyacht

Ah, long pig.

Good luck to the gentleman responsible for the need to dismantle a historic bridge in order to christen his yacht, in securing a permit for such work. If people are willing to stand around and toss eggs at his yacht, imagine what they could accomplish in due process. More appropriate that the yacht be dismantled and the pieces placed on freight cars bound for an industrial seaport prior to re-assembly. Because jobs.

OK, yeah, you have no idea about the history of Rotterdam or its symbolic value to the entire continent of Europe (together with Coventry and, some would say, Dresden)

With more and more cities the world over being developed into identical shopping malls with the exact same fast fashion outlets, mediocre chain fast food/coffee shops and ubiquitous in-your-face advertising, we really have to fight tooth and nail to preserve historic landmarks. Otherwise, future children are going to grow up not realizing that there was once a time when different cities looked different.

um except that’s literally what those words mean

Yes, because “restoring an historic landmark the people love” is EXACTLY like “tearing it apart to make way for a rich man’s yacht.” Glad we got that cleared up.

Rabble rousing needs to have more participants, frankly. If we’re not rabble rousing, we’re enabling these wankers to ruin the world. And who doesn’t like a good party on the streets with rotten eggs?

Oceano made a short-sighted and untenable promise to Jeff Bezos when they contracted to build a yacht too tall to fit under the bridge. The promise that the bridge would never be dismantled is a fact of life in Rotterdam that they have to work around.

In any case, if the central section of the bridge is removed the work will be done by a small team from a specialist engineering company. There probably isn’t any pork to be extracted from the situation, and certainly not “jobs for the boys” for dozens or hundreds of labourers.

what could go wrong

The city has already granted Bezos permission to dismantle it. That’s part of the reason people are so angry.

All of my sources tell me that a permit has not yet been granted for this proposed operation, and if not, then the call to hurl rotten eggs at the vessel on its maiden voyage is certainly only the beginning. Please read (or skip) all the way to the end for the update.
