Well, the Greek definition of barbarian was almost literally “Those weird / stupid / silly foreigners who can’t speak Greek like proper people, and make funny noises instead.”
I went to Google search for someone else - “hey, have you heard of…” - turns out I was thinking of Wendy Carlos
I happened to run across a video not too long ago of her demonstrating how she gets some particular sounds - first on an analogue synth, then on a new-fangled digital synth, in order to help demonstrate the differences… She’s so great! I love her NYC accent!
She composed the score to two Stanley Kubrick films, A Clockwork Orange (1971) and The Shining (1980), and also Tron (1982)
Score!!(s).
Yep, those are some of the best original soundtracks of that era, no doubt.
Clockwork Orange is especially creepy - contentious opinion, the soundtrack is better than the movie.
I think i do vaguely remember that, not the original programme but one of the later repeats. I see she passed away in january of this year.
Three Grammy Awards and the first classical album to go platinum awesome-sauce!
Kinda on this topic (also @anon61221983 and @politeruin I get into a quote from Hippocrates about the Scythian Effeminates in it):
For those interested in some pre-20C history of gender variance Les Feinberg’s 1996 Transgender warriors: Making history from Joan of Arc to RuPaul is worth a read.
Speaking of important transfolk who predate the 80s, there’s also Lynn Conway, who invented fundamental components of the modern computer processors that underlie all of this communication we’re doing.
Fabulous.
“ All transgender people are beautiful ”
-God damned right!
Both the work that lead to the first supercomuter at IBM & the work that led to the PC revolution at Xerox PARC. And ran the DARPA artifical intelligence program and served on the Board of the Air Force Academy - among many things…
Hey - I know her!
LOL! I can see that!
This is a stank-ass hackneyed trope of a dog whistle to “But I am accustomed to having my anti-queer bigotry go unchallenged!”
This might be interesting to read! I’ll check it out, thanks!
I love her face in the last picture!
Yeah, same. Just what i was looking for. My library doesn’t have it, unsurprisingly, but it’s going on the list. Good call.
TERFs deserve the same place in society as Catholic-exclusionary radical Ecumenical folks, as anti-Jewish, anti-black, or anti-poor folks, etc… that is to say, they should be taken to the cliffs overlooking the sea, and cast in as a sacrifice to the gods against the pox that is all bigotry.
Yeah, Sabrina is gorgeous, and so smart! Her work on Yugoslavia manages to cut through a lot of the bullshit… She edited this volume:
And contributed an article about rock music and the yugoslav state that’s rather good.
Talking of transgender warriors, I was reading about this guy the other day.
