Trump administration considers a centrally planned economy to deal with coronavirus

Hold on on second because I’m an idiot.

I thought Communism was when the means of production are owned by the people, and Fascism was when the government controls the means of production.

Am I confused? Was this a tongue in cheek comment? The internet is a strange and baffling place!

That’s socialism. Communism is when the state withers away because the means of production are owned by the people.

It’s also not what Bernie Sanders is talking about when he says socialism.

I’m almost certain, considering who typed it.

Animal Farms George Orwell equated communism and fascism to be the same thing.

It was more specifically anti-Stalinist rather than anti-communist. Orwell still self-identified as a socialist after the publication of Animal Farm.

Orwell equated Marxism-Leninism and fascism to be the same thing, based on his experiences fighting for the Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War.

He was ok with the idea of communism, as long as it was democratic.

What is Bernie Sanders talking about then ?

In the US, government=socialism=communism, because we are stupid. :no_mouth:

I hate to agree, but from all indications, the masses in the US are WAY more ignorant than I could have ever imagined; the Dumbening has been wildly successful.

Social democracy.

It’s not a bad thing for the US, but it isn’t socialism in the traditional sense. It’s just a return to a mixed economy.

Compare what Sanders says to what happened during Clement Attlee’s government, about the only thing in common is health care. Everything else is much milder.

And Trump uses that power to round up people like me who don’t pass the loyalty test and “sequester” us for health concerns.

Awww crap, sorry. I should furry that comment up.

I know that China bashing is be vogue, however I doubt that these days the US would be able to handle an outbreak of this size it quite as well as China.

Something different entirely, because the Ermächtigungsgesetz granted the Führer the power to create any kind of law on his own while the Defense Production Act is only about production.

It’s interesting that this thread so far has not bothered looking at the actual law, so let me help out: @Ceran_Swicegood provided a link to an in-depth discussion of the law, but since only 2 people clicked on the link, I assume this might be more accessible:

The law has been around since the 50ie, and seen quite some use.

I imagine most sane countries would have something like this in place, because it’s helpful in a nationwide crisis.

I hate Trump like the next guy, but it’s just normal to consider how a law like this might be helpful in a massive outbreak. Which won‘t happen, but still.

He might pay his friends and steal it from his enemies. But there‘s still courts in place that could prevent unfair use of the law.

Sounds reasonable. What do you need heating for when you have a fever to keep you warm?

I’d dare say this idiocy would do more economic harm than the Coronavirus itself given the time lag in making the required changes by which time a) it would be too late to accomplish what it needs to do and b) further mess up the economy.
Tip: The financial markets’ correlation with the economy is di minimus. The Dow doesn’t drop ~10% in a week because revenues get delayed. This was a grossly overvalued market and the parasites are using a health crisis for profit taking.
Given the context, one could maybe rightly assume that this bullshit is how a nation’s led when its leader is very narcissistic, very stupid, who leads as if everything’s just a third rate reality TV show (while he’s not stealing tax payer monies).

Why let actual facts stand in the way of a good paranoid freak out?

because any paranoid freak out leads to less recreational fucking?
