well said. here in the Keys, boating is a way of life for locals (we are a chain of islands, after all). The tourists who bring their own boats from the mainland or who rent boats are fairly easy to spot on the water - and hopefully avoid. Of course there are the trump-bannered bigga-bigga boats and they have “trumptilla’d” here, too. There seems to be enough water for me to just slip on by and find plenty of space to fish or snorkel or dive the reef without confrontation. It helps that I use a private dock and have my favorite spots all plotted in the Garmin.
I do fish with a very good friend who is, unfortunately, a trumper. We have our differences but keep it cool on the water. No trump flags on either of our boats because, hey! we have more in common than that and we are reasonable enough adults to be able to put aside the nonsense to go out and slay some grouper!
Like hot tubs, there are always plenty on the used market at prices that I’ve always found shockingly cheap. For while we were seriously checking them and marinas out, because our house was tiny and it looked like a cheaper way of getting something like a guest/spare bedroom (boats might cost money but nothing compared to real estate in a hot market… plus the waterfront location bonus for cooling off when our house was too hot). Didn’t go for it and plans went in other directions but we still dream.
You’re correct- plenty of assholes happen to own sailboats.
You just don’t become one automatically buying one in my mind. Years of dealing with Trumpian idiots on pontoon boats boating like drunken assholes, cutting within 20 ft of our boat, have convinced me only people who are already assholes buy pontoon boats. I lost track of how many near crashes they gave us, or disrupted wakes, because they didn’t know state maritime law gives right of way to sailboats.
That’s the other thing- it’s difficult to sail like an asshole. You have to be very good to pull that off. You will never see a sailboat cutting someone off on a lake, because 1 its very hard to do limited by the wind versus motor competition, and 2- it requires your real concentration to just not run aground.
I don’t mean to say only sailboats are good people- but functionally speaking on the water, it’s difficult to even be an asshole with a sailboat if you want to. It teaches humility, I feel, due to being mostly at the mercy of the wind, and the stupidity of other boaters.
The caption for that woman, “Trumpy, Trumpy, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Nibanchodancho. Nibanch O’Dancho. Nibanchodancho.
My sailboat is a 1960’s era 14 footer which cost me all of $900 on Craigslist including the trailer and a nice new sun cover. It seats up to 6 people and is easily towed by my Honda Fit, so no club dues. So yep, definitely possible to get into sailing at a decent price. I suppose I could spend money on maintaining it but it would probably be cheaper to just use it until it’s ruined and buy another for a similar price.
For anything larger that that I suspect that having a friend or acquaintance with a boat is the more convenient way to go. Sailboat owners are often looking for unpaid crews to help them out.
Holy crap, we got a wave generator? Why didn’t I get the memo!
I am tempted to embroider this line, though perhaps slightly modified for clarity and brevity, on a decorative pillow for my nautical in-laws.
It is what it is.
I’m honored, I hope! Thanks
Merfolk sounds a bit too PC for that crowd.
Now that’s what I call a successful attack!
It’s probably a repurposed Obama Earthquake Generator.

We’re just looking at this wrongly.
It isn’t about the losers who sink. It’s about how everyone has the freedom to work hard and overcome adversity so that they, too, can buy a big boat and sink losers who didn’t succeed.
Without all the sinking losers, how would Republicans know they’d found success? Thank you, you dirty, sinking losers. You are are the power behind the Republican ego…
Byway Open to All Traffic here in the UK.
Does not include boats, naturally!
Did Trump have part ownership of any of these boats? They went down faster than Trump University, Trump Steaks, Trump Taj Mahal, …
