The first step of many cons isn’t convincing the mark that there isn’t a con. It is convincing them that they are a co-conspirator. Similarly Trump didn’t convince people that he was an honest, forthright individual, just that he would be using his skilz on their behalf.

Some people do seem to think that he’s an honest, forthright individual, and then invent layers of conspiracy theories around him, like the celestial spheres in an Earth-centric cosmology, to explain what they’re seeing.
