We can never know what others may be going through, and should avoid adding to their possible burdens, either consciously or inadvertently. Doing otherwise is a sign of lacking empathy.

I wouldn’t dispute that the Mongol expansion fear reinforced the prejudices already in place, which is why I suggested that the journals and reports of Europeans might have been the source for the maps that marked out the limits of Europe. And they certainly were used to write the descriptions of cultures and areas that appeared on maps of the period (many of those including repetition of descriptions from Pliny and Herodotus etc. unchallenged).
The fears and prejudices were there, but the fact is that Kiev fell to the Mongols, and with it pretty much all of Russia. They made incursions as far as modern day Hungary and Poland. And they deserve credit for that because they really made Alexander the Great look like an amateur.
And Austria, Germany, Czech Republic and Croatia. But that is beside the point of the division of Europe and Asia and the geopolitical maps that were later produced.
But the Mongol Empire collapsed before those areas were fully conquered. And today, those countries are all part of Europe. I’m just saying I don’t think that’s purely coincidence.
